🎶It’s the most wonderful time of the year.🎶
Welcome to Spooptoberfest 2020, a month-long celebration of all things horror. This year, we’re taking a look at my all-time favorite horror franchise: SAW. I know what you’re thinking, “Are you serious? Why?” and obviously there is nothing I can say to fully express why I love this franchise so much, I had such a hard time choosing the order for this list, but I hope to give some insight this year. And yes, I am beyond hyped for Spiral.
With SAW, I want to take every trap from all 9 movies and list my top 10. This is my personal opinion and I am basing my choices on the following criteria:
- Design / Aesthetic
- Entertainment Value
Now with some of these, I need to be careful, because if you’re like me and very knowledgeable in SAW lore, then you’ll know that there are many traps that don’t abide by the original rules: a person being tortured and the main player of the game has to free them, two players face each other and one must die for the other to live, and there are traps that are made to kill as opposed to acting as a “tool” to change a person’s life. If I include any traps that fall into either or both of those categories, I will make special note of that.
Without any further adieu, as our lord and savior once said, “Let the game begin”.
#8: The Horsepower trap
Film: SAW VII (SAW 3D)
Holy shit a trap from the dumbest and most ridiculous installment makes an appearance on this list. Don’t get used to it though, this is the only one. This trap has nothing to do with the “main game” the film focuses around, but it is an important scene that the film comes back to.
Jigsaw’s Explanation: “The situation you find yourself in is of your own doing. You, your girlfriend, and your friends are all racists. You have intimidated others based on their physical differences. But today it is you who will run scared. Your pathetic friends follow your every word, Evan. Therefore you will be the only one capable of saving them and yourself. You’ve judged others by the color of their skin, and today, Evan, you will learn that we are all the same color on the inside.”….. My god… what the fuck?
How it works: This trap technically only requires 1 person. The other three were just extra victims. But a player is ultra-mega-super glued to a car seat, and all they have to do is reach far enough to pull the lever.
Why I like it: Not gonna lie, the only reason this is on here is that the whole scene is very entertaining. I do think this trap could have been done successfully. Sure, it would have been extremely painful, it would have ended in major blood loss, and the nerves would probably never have grown back, but I think it’s doable. What kind of glue is that strong? Everything that happens in this scene is just amazing.
